At Smethport Area High School, we are pro-active in keeping our student-athletes safe and educated on various injuries. We also can provide help in recovering from these injuries. Much of the discussion in athletics has focused on concussions, heat illness, and sudden cardiac arrest. ConcussionWise, HeatWise, and CardiacWise are free online courses developed for athletes by Sport Safety International. We have provided links to view these online courses and a chance to test your knowledge. At the completion of the course, you will receive an email stating you have completed the course.

It seems we can’t open up a newspaper or watch a news broadcast without hearing about concussions in sports, and how dangerous playing with a concussion can be. Although some might dismiss these reports as media hype, a concussion is a serious injury that is finally getting the attention it deserves. It is important for all members of the ‘concussion management team,’ including coaches, athletes, school administrators, physicians, athletic trainers, and other health care providers, to understand what a concussion is, how to recognize a concussion, and properly manage a concussion. Enter ConcussionWise, a family of quality online education programs designed to provide the most up-to-date information regarding concussion prevention, recognition, care and recovery.

Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in young athletes. CardiacWise is an online program, developed in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society, that is designed to educate coaches and others involved in sports and physical activity on the prevention of sudden cardiac arrest in athletes. This course is approximately 20 minutes in length. Individuals who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion.
HeatWise is an online program designed to educate coaches and others involved in sports and physical activity on the prevention and management of exertional heat illness. This course is approximately 20 minutes in length. Individuals who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of completion.
